He's the guy who Arthur sacrifices his life for at the end of Red Dead 2

12 years after Red Dead 2, the government make him take out the rest of the outlaw gang in exchange for his freedom

But at the end they betray him and this happens

Arthur's sacrifice to let John live a happy life was meaningless

And further, in the RD1 epilogue where you play as John's son, Jack, you get your revenge by killing the government agent that killed John, which leads to Jack living the life of an outlaw

Basically, both Arthur and John's sacrifices were meaningless
