It's useful for the first few routes but then once you reach the first two gyms, you need excessive luck to beat them. Bulbasaur is best for the later on routes that are full of water and ground type Pokemon alongside several gyms, but Squirtle would handle Fire type Pokemon like Vulpix and Growlithe better
