Capgras Syndrome occurs when there is damage to the connection between the frontal lobe and the temporal lobe. These two lobes work together for facial recognition processing. With this specific condition a person is still capable of recognizing a familiar face, however, there is an emotional disconnect. What commonly occurs in these cases is that the patient will create conspiracy theories to explain this phenomenon (i.e. that their family was kidnapped and the people they see are imposters). This condition is rare but may occur in some cases of Alzheimer’s.
