I read the catholic church was partly responsible for that because of their belief that cats, especially black cats, were satanic and or witchcraft.
They killed all the cats. Cats helped keep the rat population down. Lol.
Who knows. We give absolutely everything all the meaning it has, or doesn’t as the case may be.
There is no inherent meaning for anything outside of what we give it. This is true both individually and collectively.
