“Always smile, and smile harder in tough times”. Those were the words of my Dad and Mom before they died. I was never able to help them. I was never able to do anything to prevent it. If only i was able to be there sooner, and protect them. I should be sad, but I kept on smiling forward. The truth was that I was indeed sad, it was just that I shouldn’t let my sadness stop myself from helping others. That is what makes me happy. The other people’s smiles make me happy. I promised to my dead parents that I won’t cry anymore. That I will keep a smile, even if I am being tortured.
Now here we are in the present. The year is 2025, and I am currently living in Tokyo. And if I were to say anything, it is depressing around here. Crime is so prevalent in these parts. Drugs ruined the place. Bloodstains are everywhere. I was surprised when in 2019 the Guinness World Records book said that Tokyo was the safest city in the world. Maybe the west sent all their corrupt citizens to Japan so they can be corrupt there instead. What a selfish move.
“What even is a smile?” I asked myself. How do I do it, and why do people do it?
Now here I am, walking home. People say home is a comfortable place, and I would say that too if it weren't for the people who live with me. They would tie me up to a chair and beat me, every day. The pain was unbearable. If you would run away, they would eventually find you, and the beatings would be worse. You can’t do anything about it. The police won’t help since they are so corrupt. This truly is a life of torture.
I arrived home, readying myself for another beating, an even harder one in fact because I used a human sized doll that looked like me. I hear a voice and brace myself. “Hey Itsuki. Long time no see.” the voice says. It’s him, Arthur, one of the corrupt people from the west. He and his gang have been on crack and were letting out their aggression on me for some reason. “What do you want?”, I say, knowing what is next.
Suddenly I had these thoughts. “Is my life supposed to be this way? Is there any hope for me?” I thought to myself. I started thinking about running away from this life, running away to start anew, fresh from the torture that I have faced. Having to be forced to deliver drugs to Arthur and the others. Being forced to be beaten up everyday. Is this the life that I want?
Suddenly, I finally snapped and made a mad dash outside the house. “After him, boys” Arthur shouts.
Chapter 2:Running
I ran. I ran away as fast as I could. I knew that torture and all of the things that made life bad were behind me, running towards me. I went past the restaurant that once poisoned someone, the place where I get the drugs to deliver to Arthur. I ran. I just want to live a life far from drugs and corruption.
My parents’ death, being beaten everyday. I wanted all of that gone. I wanted a life where I was with people who didn’t hurt me. Those who did care for me, just like Mom and Dad. I am
Suddenly, I tripped on a rock. Looking back, Arthur and the others were about to beat me with the bat they used to beat me with. I was so scared, I passed out.
The next thing I saw was a meadow.
Chapter 3:A new face
“Hey, get up,” Someone said, “This isn’t the best place to take a nap, you know.” It was the voice of a person who seemed to not want to kill me. He had blond hair and was wearing a clean shirt. It seemed like he wanted to help me. I wasn’t going to fall for the same trick again. That was how I met Arthur and the others. They said that they were going to destroy the crime and make Tokyo not a corrupt place anymore, but they did the exact opposite. The voice ended up being a person. He seemed to not be like the people in Tokyo. In fact, he was all clean, no blood or dirt stains or anything. He seemed to not be from Tokyo. “If you’re going to trick me into just beating me up over and over again, I am not going to follow you” I reply in a cold manner, “Are you even from here?” “Get up” The person replied again.
I woke up again. What I saw was the same person, except his shirt was covered in blood stains and was carrying a sword of some kind, which was weird, considering that a pistol is a much better option. Next to him were the dead bodies of Arthur and the rest of his gang. “Are you ok?” he asked. “I’m fine,” I reply coldly, “thanks, but I gotta be on my way, I don’t trust anyone here. Not even you.”
“Hey, why so cold?” he replied, “I just saved your life!” I didn’t reply back. I just walked away. “Where are you going?” he asked. I did not reply. “Hey, I’m a cop, you know? You have to reply because I have to ask questions.” He continued. “Yeah, a corrupt one!” I shouted back. “Don’t you want to get out of this stupid country?” He shouted back in reply.
I stopped walking. That was exactly what I wanted. Not only was only Tokyo corrupt, but all of Japan was corrupt. Our president was a dictator that wouldn’t let anyone out of the country. If you were caught, you were sent to jail and beaten there. “And exactly how do you do that?” I ask with a chuckle. “I lied about being a cop.”, he replied, “I’m a spy for Britain, although I am originally from here. ” “Ok. Take me there, but if you trick me again, I’ll kill you.” I replied “But first, what is your name?”. “Call me ‘Yuuri’. I’m 19” he replied, “And yours?” “Mine is Itsuki. I am 18.” I replied.
He made a face where he made the corner of his mouth go up and he closed his eyes. “What are you doing?” I ask. “What do you mean?” Yuuri replied, stopping with the face. “No, what face did you just make?” I asked again. “That was a smile,” He said.
“I heard that once from my dad. He said, ``Keep smiling, and smile harder in tough times.” I say, “Why do people smile?” I ask. “You smile when you are happy” There was another word that I did not know, but I decided to stop there.
There was something about him that I felt when I was near him, but I just didn't mind it.
Chapter 4:flying
There was a vehicle-like thing with wheels and something like wings of a bird. It was pure metal. “Who could afford such a thing?” I asked myself. “What is that?” I asked. “That is a plane, although this specific one is a fighter jet” Yuuri replied, “ Have you ever seen one?” “No I have not.” I replied.
We boarded the “plane”, whatever it is called. “And this is how we are going to get out?” I said. “You might not believe it, but this will fly.” He put a strap around me. “What are you doing? Are you tying me up?” I shouted, struggling to get out. He pressed a button on the strap and the strap got out on its own. “That is how you get out.” Yuuri replied, “ That is a seatbelt, so that you won't fly out of the plane.” I stayed calm for once.
“We’re about to fly, so brace yourself.” Yuuri said. Suddenly, the plane flew. It was so fast I couldn’t keep up with the speed. “How does it feel flying in a plane?” Yuuri asks. “It’s so fast” I just barely was able to say.
Suddenly, a rocket-like thing flew past us. “What was that, Yuuri?” I ask in confusion. “Crap, the enemy found us.” Yuuri said, “Itsuki, brace yourself. I’m going to go way faster.” There was a screen that seemed to show the back of the plane, and I saw another plane that was following us. Suddenly we went on a huge loop and ended up behind the plane. “I got you now, sucker” Yuuri shouted whilst shooting a rocket-like thing. It ended up missing the plane, and the plane did a loop and ended up behind us again.
“Itsuki, have you ever flown a plane before?” Yuuri said. “Wait, no no no no, this isn’t part of the plan” I said in fear. Yuuri opened the window and I became scared. Was he going to commit suicide? “I want you to pull the 2 sticks I was holding a while ago down, '' Yuuri said. I did that and the plane flew up. Yuuri got out a weapon of some sort and got out of the plane.
“Yuuri don’t do it, '' I shouted. He midair aimed at the enemy plane. I was going to lose my chance to run away from this country. I was going to lose my new life and freedom, and most importantly, I was going to lose a person who I can finally trust. Flashbacks of Mom and Dad in the fire trying to get out. Then Yuuri pulled the trigger, and within milliseconds, the enemy plane blew into pieces, but Yuuri was still falling. The plane was about to finish the loop, and I shouted his name. Suddenly, Yuuri fell to the inside of the plane. “Wooooooooooooooooo'' Yuuri shouted in excitement. I just nearly lost a friend. I started crying. “Why are you crying, Itsuki. I’m here” Yuuri says. “I lost my Mom and Dad in a fire. I don't want to lose another person.” I replied. Yuuri was about to cry, but instead, he sucks it up and returns to the plane controls. “You know, I lost my parents too.” Yuuri said, “Not only them, but any friend I met would be assassinated by a sniper. I could never find the killer until me and my friend were in a building a month ago. A person was loading his shotgun and I heard it. When he swung open the door, I threw my knife at his head and killed him. Turns out, the person responsible for the killings was the only friend that wasn't assassinated.” “Yuuri don’t do anything dangerous again.” I said.
“You know, a friend is someone you can trust.” Yuuri says, “You trust that they won't sell you out. You trust that they will do a good job on anything. You trust that when they jump off a plane to backflip shoot another plane and then get back on the same plane, they will survive.”
“Hey Yuuri, what is happiness?” I ask. “Happiness is when you are having fun and you smile and stuff like that,” Yuuri replies. “Oh, I have never felt that before.” I replied. “At some point or another, you feel happiness,” Yuuri replies again.
Whatever I was feeling with Yuuri, I gotta find out what it is.
Chapter 5:Britain
“Wake up, sleepyhead.” A voice said. I woke up to Yuuri on the plane. I peek out of the window and see an entirely different place. We get out of the plane and are greeted by a woman. “Hello, agent Daybreak, how did it go?” the woman says. “It was miserable, Natasha. Don’t bring me there again.” Yuuri says. Natasha makes a worried face. “Daybreak, you have to go back there again” Natasha says. Yuuri sighs and then groans. “Who is this kid? I dont think we’re allowed to bring anyone into here” Natasha says. “He’s Itsuki. I rescued him from some drug people.” Yuuri replies. Natasha just shrugs it. “Yuuri, if you get in trouble, don't blame it on me.” Natasha says.
“Can we go walk around?” I ask. “First, let's get you washed up.” Yuri replies. I get into the shower and get washed up. Yuuri got me some different clothes other than the bloodstained one that I had, which looked really clean. I decided to go explore the city with Yuuri.
There was a restaurant nearby with some fancy food and stuff, so me and Yuuri went there. “In Britain, instead of yen, we use pounds as money,” Yuuri said while giving some “pounds' ' to the waiter. We ended up paying a total of 150 pounds, which doesn't sound like much until Yuuri told me that 1 pound is around 160 yen, so it ended up being 24,000 yen, which was a lot.
They had something called “steak”, which was really good. They also had something called wine, which tasted really sour, but I finished it.
We decided to go around Britain and saw that there was an “E3” thing, and a lot of people were there in a crowd. I was about to ask Yuuri why there was a crowd there, but I lost him. I felt scared, then Yuuri found me. I felt relieved when he found me there. He told me to hold his hand so that I won't get lost.
Next, Yuuri and I went to his house. He showed me to my room and said that this is where I will be sleeping. It had a really fast computer, which I remembered how to type. I had a computer when I was really young, so I remember how to use it. It had “Minecraft” and “Genshin Impact”.
Yuuri decided to check on me to see how everything was going and saw me play Genshin Impact. “How are you enjoying the game?” Yuuri asked. I somehow found the controls and got everything under control. “The game is relaxing,” I replied.
The feeling was really strong now. Whenever I was near Yuuri, I felt safe, I felt like if anything happened to me, Yuuri would save me. I felt like I was cared for. “Hey Yuuri,” I said. “What’s up?” Yuuri said. “The second I met you, I had a strange feeling when I was near you.” I said, “Whenever I am near you, I feel ‘Happy’, If I am using the word correctly.” Yuuri started being confused. “Like, give me more context,” He said. I was a little embarrassed to speak, but nevertheless, I decided to continue. “It feels like I feel cared for. Whenever I am near you, I feel safe.” I continue, “I feel happy near you”. Yuuri started looking embarrassed.
“You know, when I met you, I felt like I could do something for someone. I couldn’t do anything about those friends that I couldn’t save.” Yuuri said. I started to feel him and understand him. “ When I helped you escape on a plane, it felt good. It felt like I did something I couldn’t do for those I lost.” He continued. “Yuuri…” I softly managed to squeak out. “Itsuki, I feel happy that I have someone to protect,” Yuuri continued, “that I have a reason to be happy.” I started feeling embarrassed. “Itsuki…” Yuuri said in a soft voice. There was a long pause. I did not know what he was going to say. “Yuuri, is something up?” I asked. Suddenly he hugged me. “Itsuki, I love you” Yuuri said, “I will protect you always. I have a reason to be happy.” “Yuuri…” I said softly, “I love you too”. “I’ll protect you, no matter what” Yuuri said.
“So this is happiness” I thought to myself, “When someone cares for you, when someone will protect you no matter what.” The best part was that when I didn’t notice, I smiled. I felt true happiness, when someone is there for you, when someone cares for you. Yuuri changed his face from a serious face to his smile. “Itsuki, let's grab a coffee, then play some genshin impact, '' Yuuri said.
At that moment, I felt happy. I found a new life, and I met the one who cared for me the most.
