I've never used a sowing machine. I used to hand make dresses for my sister's dolls but they always looked like crap and broke in a day

You could do what I did:
I used old clothes,stained days and things like that,and kept making new things until I found what was easiest to make.Took a lot of material,but it was worth it.
I did a fitted t-shirt (that may be a bit too fitted, but hey, it's an excuse to work out a bit!), and fixed a turtleneck that's coming apart. I'm looking to try to do some more stuff... once I find time for it.
