And talking about paper cash, gold and silver. Paper cash used to be a 1:1 exchange for gold or silver coins for the sake of practicality. Paper cash was meant to be an easier way to carry currency. A person could either carry 20 gold/silver coins or one bill that can be exchanged for 20 gold/silver coins. One of the things that makes me cringe is when people come into the store with a sandwich bag full of coins. Twice I've grabbed some coin rolls the store keeps on hand to roll excessive coins in the drawer and told the customer to either roll up their change or go somewhere else without actually saying those words out loud.
Anyway one of the issues with the old and new currency, is that the new system of currency just doesn't have the sense of worth that the old currency did being gold and silver based. I have no doubt a person had a real sense of accomplishment when they got paid in gold and/or silver instead of what we have today.
And I guess that's the point of what people like Woodrow Wilson(a big time socialist) did with the creation of the Federal Reserve and later FDR(another socialist) who started the removal of the gold/silver backing and standard. It kind of ruined the sense of accomplishment and made people start to thing that working just isn't worth it because the new currency is made from trees with no real 1:1 exchange and coins are made from copper, nickel, and zinc. . .big frickin' whoopie-doo!
