Do you know what Jesus was referring to when He said that to the church leaders? There is no way to Heaven except through Jesus Christ. No matter how much money a person has or how many good works they do. The only way is through Jesus Christ. That's why He said it is easier to pass a camel through the eye of a needle.

I guess if you're going to quote the Bible it's best to know the meaning of the quotes.

exactly. be nice because you know being a douche isn't good. if you're being kind and generous because you're expecting to receive a reward for it later on COMPLETELY defeats the purpose. you're not being generous if (you believe that) you will get something for it later. i pre-order a chassis in a game before it is released, i haven't donated charity money to the game (well, we can discuss price values another time), i have simply made a purchase for a product i will receive in X amount of time

I just spent an hour and a half speaking with Mormon missionaries. Wonderful lads, who believe everything they say. As do I though, so we had a good chat. I have no issues with anyone calling my Atheist stance wrong, it just bewilders my mind by what logic/reasoning is used to be able to firmly say there is a God. It's not the job of the Atheist to prove God doesn't exist, it's the job of the Christians. And they aren't doing a very good job at this point. For example, I could say that there is a gold teapot orbiting the moon. You could disagree with me if you used logic/reasoning. Where did it come from? Who put it there? But when you ask me "How do you know there is a teapot orbiting the moon?", my response would never be, "You have to have faith". You cannot "faith" something into existence. Also, I would never ask you to prove that the teapot doesn't exist. How could you? Lastly, with regards to encounters with death. Nightly, we dream. We never believe those dreams to be real. Yet we dream. When people are near death, usually they are unconscious or suffered some trauma. It isn't logically/reasonable to ask a person what dreams they had while it was going on. And, it would be even less reasonable or logical to ever use those dreams told by people as evidence towards a God when debating it. That's my only issue with religion and God. Ot goes against what I consider reasonable/logical. Politely!

Kudos,.. you did not slander a belief,.. but rather stated the concept of God does not apply to your logic. For christians,.. the notion of creation makes sense in every scientific notion. Nothing from nothing,.. cannot create something. It has to be intelligent design for us. Atheist can argue many theories,.. big bang etc.. Collision of atoms,... and so forth. But where,.. did the 1st atom come from,.. and what particle created that ,... and from what? So for us,.. it is science.. and science and religion can coexist.

All christians that I know,.. do not live a Godly life for simply a "reward" of sitting at Gods table in the afterlife. We believe that we live forever,.. and this mortal life is but a stage of our existence. We are given a choice as to how we conduct ourselves,.. and choose to live the example that Christ lived. Now,.. I will not be so ignorant to think all christians are motivated in the exact way,.. or that those claiming to be Christians live perfect examples of Christ,... but the ones in my life are of a similar mindset.

And yet people ask what's the harm of religion - and we cite all these different problems with religion: the global gag-rules and things like that , the oppression of different people - but there's a bigger harm with religion, and it's the reason why I'm outspoken about it, and that's because the average feel-good Johnny-in-the-pew person who is decent and kind and loving and good to their family and generally a good person to be around has polluted their mind to the point where they are unable to take credit for their accomplishments and responsibility for their actions. They are unable to interact on an interpersonal level with the people around them, to build a community in this cooperative society where that is absolutely essential. They have got this mentality that they are worthless without God.-Matt dillahunty.

Umm...more Christians commit suicide than atheists simply because there are so many more Christians. The study you are referring to purports that Athiests have a higher suicide rate than Christians. I do not know if that is true or not as the study was flawed. Regardless, I personally find not believing in an "afterlife" liberating since I try to live my only life to the fullest.
Also, I don't think any less of people for being Christians- if thier beliefs help them live a better life, then good for them. I just dislike the intolerance displayed by some of them. To them I say be more like Jesus and love your fellow man rather than try to run his life. Finally, if heaven doesn't have bourbon, golf courses, fly fishing. and strip clubs, I'm not interested in visiting anyway lol.

It seems to me that Christians would have a higher suicide rate, because we believe in a afterlife. Whereas atheists are trying to squeeze out as much time as possible here on Earth. I personally wonder why any Christian would be so afraid of their own mortality if they believe in what the profess.
reply

Christians would fear death BY SUICIDE because it is an unforgivable sin which will send you straight to hell (which is supposed to be even more horrible than whatever is being suffered in this life). Suicide is seen as an option to end suffering. So for athiest who are suffering, it would be seen as a true end. For Christians, who don't have a lapse in faith, it would not be an option because it would lead to eternal suffering.
reply

I never read that in the Bible. Where does it say suicide is unforgivable? That's just something the Catholic church tells people who don't read it for themselves (I think).

Oblivion is nothing to worry about. As Mark Twain once said, "I didn't exist for millions of years before I was born and was not inconvenienced in the least by it." I'd think it would be a lot tougher being religious and always wondering whether you measure up to what you believe your god expects.
reply

We will never be perfect until we see God in Heaven and He gives us perfect bodies. All we can do is live by God's word as much as we can and trust in God.

And as for Mark Twain's quote. Mark Twain was a man. He obviously did not believe in a higher power with a quote like that. He did not not exist for millions of years because time has not existed for that long.

I don't say this in an insulting way, but the people who wrote the Bible were rather primitive. They knew far less about the world than we know today. That's why I have such a difficult time taking their word over modern day scientists when it comes to the age of the universe and other matters such as that.
reply
3 ups, 1 reply
I disagree. I believe people in those days k we far more than we give them credit for. Evolution tells us that the beginning of man was primitive and ape-like, grunting and unable to really do much of anything, while creation and the Bible tells us the beginning of man was very smart. The Bible tells us that man was created in the image of God and God isn't dumb.

Not tough at all, it's just the way it is. If you get comfort from thinking there is an afterlife with God, by all means, do so. It doesn't change the reality, that when you die, you are dead.
reply
3 ups, 2 replies
If there is no afterlife and when you die there is nothing , then what's keeping you from ending it all right now? Family? Friends? Your dog? If that's the case, then why? So they don't grieve for the rest of their lives? But what does that matter since when they die they'll just cease to exist as well?

Where do you codes of conduct come from? Where do your morals come from? Man? If man, why do you allow another human being to dictate your morallity? If you believe we're all born with a set of moral codes, who gave it to us? A Monkey? Some fish with legs?

I think about it this way: either us or the atheists are right. Not both. The atheists better be right, but I'm not going to take a chance. People who have near death experiences seldom report nothing or no feeling, instead it's almost always hyperawareness of some form. If death was a simple end, near death experiences would not be life changing event for people.

Not exhausting at all. You die, you die. There is absolutely no bigger picture. Our arrogance does not bring a "purpose" into existence. With love. I enjoy debating this stuff by the way. Very rare to find a debate without insults. Thank you!

I'm not an insult throwing type of person. All I do is share the gospel and pray for those who don't believe. That's what the Bible tells me to do. It's up to God to lay it on the person's heart. I won't keep pestering someone if they don't want to hear it.

If you are tired of hearing it, imagine how frustrated and tiresome it is for us Christians being told to take down our religious symbols. How we have to conform to the atheist's belief or we're threatened with violence or fines.

What keeps me from ending it all? My belief that this is the only life I get, so I don't want to waste it. That's also why I don't do drugs.

My moral code comes from society. If I deem something to be harmful to a person I consider that to be immoral. If I deem something to be helpful or beneficial to someone I consider that to be moral. Morality does have gray areas, to be sure.

Sooooo ok then, I guess people have proved in the comments that no matter what there will always be an argument, and nothing would be solved. I stick to True Science, without all of the overblown theories, I stick to the science that is bases on facts and Logic, And guess what? Im not an Atheist, Evolutionist or anything like that, but a Scientist that believes in Elohim (God in Hebrew) exists due to science. In every single thing that I have learned and researched, with an unbiased mind, I have found no other possible explanation, I've tried to find the reasoning in other theories, but found none. No other "scientific" theory works with common knowledge or any other scientific fact. So basically whatim saying is I did look for other answers, but science and logic broke the other "answers". Science and logic has led me to believe that it all had to be intelligently designed. Now I don't expect any of you to agree with me because I already know that many of you won't, nor do I expect anyone not to have a rebuttal to my comment. I have one conclusion to this agrument, it will never end, till the end of time.

Your depiction of Hell seems to coincide with the world's view. It isn't one big party. It is dark, hot (more so than we can even imagine) and you will be completely alone. You will have a feeling of emptiness alone with constant pain and suffering. All for eternity.

Alright then... but remember, everyone has a different point of view. you've got yours, and I've got mine. i see it as a little bit of the modern mixed with the ancient greek depiction. it's completely up to your own self to find what it is like, since it has never been scientifically proven to exist. unless you count school as a form of it...
