You're right about that. I think the stat was with respect to gun related deaths, though. I think that might be high ... but I'm not 100% sure.
reply
1 up, 1 reply
No because I know off the top of my head Mexico has more "gun deaths" (which I don't see why murder with a gun is worse than murder with a knife, rope, hammer, car, coat hanger, ect.) than the U.S. despite stricter gun laws.
reply

I said high, not highest. 10 for every 100000 I believe. About one third of those being murder. That's very high for a developed nation ... especially the supposedly "Greatest Nation". It ranks up there with other third world countries gripped by drug gangs and civil unrest. Face it ... guns are America's shame ... stop b**ching about liberals and fix the f**kin' problem.

Well, the problem is, by outlawing guns, the people who obey the law and use guns for something other than killing sprees are left weaponless, while anyone who tries to get guns illegally are the ones who will misuse them. So ironically, making laws to keep people safe only makes the situation worse.

I'm using logic. If you say "Ok, guns are illegal" then citizens who obey the law--and who use guns for legit purposes--are now left defenseless. Who's going to go the extra mile to get guns from illegal sources? Criminals.
Therefore, outlawing guns only makes the situation more dangerous.
reply
2 ups, 2 replies
i haven't talked about outlawing guns btw, that's your own argument, but 'logic' tells me making guns harder to acquire for criminals is better than arming everyone. What you describe is a very paranoid trigger happy society, i would bet you are from a southern region of US
reply
3 ups, 6 replies
I could be from Texas, Alaska, Africa or China for all you know. But I don't believe that's any of your business.
Anyway, the problem is, we can impose all the laws we want to try to regulate firearms. But that won't make the illegal gun business go away. In fact, if anything, that will make people who shouldn't have guns in the first place but want them be even more determined to acquire them, and if the regulations are tight enough to keep them from legally getting them, where will they turn to? The dangerous business.

Actually, SpookyScarySkeletons is not me (Though they do entertain me, so thanks for that).

This wonderful account was originally created to counter the effects of a downvote fairy going crazy on my memes, because at the time I thought, "Life isn't fair? Bullcrap! I'll MAKE it fair!"
Then I started observing downvote fairies on other users and started helping them out, so ta-da! I've created the upvote fairy. And when we needed alts, it was pretty convenient.
0 ups
SHOOT! I was always afraid of doing that. I'm so forgetful it's not even funny, and I always thought one of these days I'd be found out by seeing my alt with someone having replied to them, and, since I've grown so attached, I'd reply on the wrong account.

Oh, thanks, but I think my cover's blown XD Well, it's not like I was that secretive, so oh well. And no, but I do consider myself the unofficial upvote fairy :)
Aaaanyway, yeah. This account started off because I didn't want to face downvote fairies like a man, and now it's evolved into a full-blown Santa Claus of Imgflip!

To be clear, i'm making the point that the government could impose the same types of restrictions on both vehicles and guns. Currently I live in a state where there are virtually no restrictions on vehicles. Plenty of people are on the highways here and elsewhere that probably shouldn't operate a tricycle let alone a car. That said, I'll take my chances on the street with freedom loving civilians who make mistakes, before surrendering my liberty to paper pushing bureaucrats.

The only reason why I'm for gun control, is because my friend was accidentally shot by his younger brother. The parents were not trained, the younger brother wasn't trained, he was hurt badly and my friend died. The parents obviously arrogant enough to leave a glock lying around. The child (who was 6 at the time) did not know what a gun was or how dangerous it is. Point is, I support gun regulation because people are careless, and in many cases stupid. If you're properly trained with your weapon, you have a license, you are not crazy or suicidal, and regularly train with the weapon (at least once every year), then I am OK with you carrying a gun

Well damn, I can't resist getting involved. (I was doing so well, too...) Running givemy2cents.exe

Now, there's nothing wrong with owning a gun or two, they have their uses.(hunting, competitive shooting, etc) The problem is the types of guns: rifles and shotguns, sure. You hunt with them. Pistols, assault rifles, and anything fully auto? Absolutely not. There is no legitimate reason why you would ever need any of those types of guns. There's also no reason why you would need to be able to carry any weapon around in public. However, the guns themselves are only part of the problem, the rest is due to society and people's mindsets. Take Canada for example: a lot of the people who live here have a gun of some description, but we don't feel the need to ALWAYS be armed. Now, in the US, there's a sort of cultural thing about guns, and nearly everyone has at least one. I've often heard the claim "we need to be able to defend ourselves." and it seems to me that that's because everyone is armed. What I mean is, it's a self-escalating loop: people buy guns to protect themselves, and then there's a bunch of armed people walking around, so people buy guns to protect themselves from them, and it continues from there. The truth is, putting limits of gun ownership and carrying would be greatly beneficial. People say that doing that will leave all the guns in the hands of criminals, and I'll be honest here, they're half right. While there will obviously still be some black-market guns, the amount of freely available ones will be reduced drastically. While there will still be a few armed criminals out there, that's exactly what we have police officers for.
reply
5 ups
And a police officer is not gonna be able to save you from being shot before it happens
reply
4 ups
If America started taking away guns they would be taking them away from people who have registered firearms. And many of the criminals have unregistered firearms (gotten from other people ect) and they have no way of tracking that...
reply

The restriction of fully automatic firearms is regulated by the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986. With the passage of FOPA, the United States Federal Government declared it illegal to make a new fully automatic firearm, convert a semi automatic firearm to fire in full auto, or to import a fully automatic firearm unless “transferred to the U.S. Government (USG) or a law enforcement agency, or to a Federal firearms licensee for use as a USG or law enforcement sales sample.” (27 CFR 479.105(d)). This means that any full auto firearm manufactured in the US or imported to the US before May 19, 1986 is legal for anyone who is willing to pay a one time $200 tax stamp (per firearm) to own a full auto or burst fire gun. However, due to the fixed supply of fully automatic firearms that currently exist in the US that are available for civilian purchase, the price for the qualifying full auto guns is outrageous. For example, I found a full auto MP-40 described as being in “85% condition” for sale on GunBroker.com for the starting price of $14,000. Although, depending on the firearm, it is not uncommon to find prices upwards of $20k.

Third. My bad. But the point still holds. "If your not a criminal, why do you need the fourth"? It's flawed logic. Just because we don't *need* an assault rifle doesn't mean the whole Second Amendment is voided.
reply
4 ups, 1 reply
The founding fathers of the United States weren't concerned about hunting deer. Their foremost concern was ensuring that we maintain an ability to throw off the yoke of an oppressive government! Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar or ignorant.
reply
0 ups, 2 replies
(Actually, hunting existed back in those times, so yes, people did care about hunting deer)
Anyway, the problem is, I get that the original point of arming everyone was to throw off an oppressive government, but although our system isn't exactly perfect at the moment, we aren't trying to start a total revolution (And no, don't say we aren't revolting because they're taking the guns away. There are other ways to fight.).
We have the right to own handguns, shotguns, that sort of thing. I'm not opposing that.
But honestly, give me three good reasons why anyone would need--REALLY and honestly NEED--an assault rifle as opposed to a handgun or shotgun.
reply
3 ups, 3 replies
Again, we don't need a reason. It is our inalienable right. Whether for hunting, skeet shooting, home protection or keeping an overreaching government from becoming oppressive. Never surrender your rights at the demand of politicians and bureaucrats!

Well, you don't see mass murders happening with a hammer (now THAT would be a gorefest O.o) but considering the fact that most people don't walk around with assault rifles and, despite the fact that people die every few seconds, even a handful of people killed in a mass shooting are all over the national news, guess which one we want to ban?
reply
2 ups, 1 reply
An assault rifle is no different from a hunting rifle. Your standard M4 platform today is the AR15 which is semi-automatic. I believe (And correct me if I am wrong) automatic weapons are prohibited and banned. You say to ask for legitimate reasons to have rifles and such. Well let me ask you something... Give me a LEGITIMATE reason to ban guns. "Because it will bring down the murder rate!" No it wont... Mexico has gun regulations and it is one of the worst countries to live in for murder rate with firearms. And that's because of the cartels. They know no average citizen won't have a weapon to oppose them, so they take over. And their police force is doing poorly against them. So what makes you think OUR police force will do any better against the large gangs?

Yes they were/are. A hammer and a knife were some of the first tools of man. And these were to make war with. Human nature states the inevitability to make war. It's in our genes. A simple street brawl is that urge to do so. A firearm is just another tool of war that we CANNOT avoid.
