It does depend on your location. In a place like California or most of new England they are correct. Not as much in the south though, for example. Still, there have been guilty people let off the hook for crimes by accusing the prosecutor or judge of being hateful toward lgbt if they convict, so the argument isn't necessarily unfounded.
