I think imgflip is too toxic=
somewhat disagree, it really depends on your outlook and how you approach others especially those you disagree with. It also depends on the streams you frequent. Politics for example can be toxic.

I think imgflip is in a bad state and needs big changes + if so what I would do to fix this
somewhat agree. I've seen Imgflip change quite a bit in the year and a half I've been here and from discussions with longtime users. Many think it's less fun now and it could be from the change in population. Famous users have left and people come and go more frequently it seems. I would introduce a training period for new users to learn the ins and outs of memeing, navigating the site, learning the written and unwritten rules of imgflip, learning how to deal with trolls and difficult people would be a great way to help improve the site. I think people come here not knowing how to make funny memes, or resort to upvote begging, or start participating in flame wars and that's why it's in a bad state. A tutorial or mentorship program with established and trusted users helping new users over a few weeks and a graduation ceremony might help make Imgflip Grate Again:)

I think imgflip has a problem with making sure the LGBTQ+ community feels welcome.

I'm on the fence with this one because I can see both sides. If you visit the politics stream it does tend to be more in the conservative side. But we do have several pro LGBTQ+ streams and they are always welcome in the Imgflip family and often shipped together. I think more dialogue between the LGBTQ and straight population would help immensely to improve understanding. I don't agree with Christians hitting you all carrying Rainbow Flags with Bible versus and saying you're going to Hell because that's not true. I also have seen some pretty heterophobic posts also and anytime I try to have a civil discussion in the LGBTQ stream I'm shot down so I try to stick to the Think Tank for those conversations. I think efforts at peace needs to come from both sides.

(Part 2 because I ran out of space)

What would you do to make sure all types of people feel welcome on imglip?
I would continue what I have been doing. Encouraging them, showing them around the site, introducing them to other users and streams, (I started the How2Imgflip stream just for this purpose) upvoting their content and giving advice on how to get the best experience here. I try to see what they're interested in a direct them to streams they may like. I helped start the Imgflip Family (I wear the Mom hat there) and anyone can join through adoption or shipping. I hope new users always feel welcome here because we were all at one time new users. It makes me sad to see users leave so I try to see what I can do to help them stay if possible.

If you saw someone being bullied, or harassed, what would you do to help?

I have seen it and that's why I and a few other memers started the Mentor Stream. I call out anyone who bullies others on my own streams because I feel that disagreements can be handled civilly if you choose. I've never bullied anyone despite claims from a certain user that I am a troll. I never curse at or belittle others intentionally. Now my sarcasm and humor can sometimes be misconstrued but I will turn right around and apologize if there's been a misunderstanding. That has been rare though. I try to teach the young users here internet smarts because I do think disagreements and humor can be interpreted as toxic hate when it really isn't. Toxic hate is continually harassing you like constantly pointing out your faults unnecessarily, cussing you out constantly, telling you to kill yourself, just making you feel worthless. I've seen too many people participate in that. I've been told what goes on in politics doesn't count as harassment while other streams it does so I think the line should be drawn somewhere. It can be a gray area at times. I do think young users need to be aware that the internet is not user friendly or kid safe in general and in many cases imgflip is geared more towards adults.

(Seriously did not know there was a word limit in comments!) Part 3

If you win the election, what would you do first?
Since this election is only role playing and not an actual title like Global MOD I'm not sure what I'll be able to do different than what I'm already doing as an established member here. I do think having theme weeks like we used to do would help improve the fun stream and unite users with a common goal. I would like to propose a newbie training course and implement it immediately. This curse would also include how to recognize and deal with actual harassment.

If you the election, what is your plan for the future? Make Imgflip a fun environment for all users of all backgrounds and beliefs to unite under the goal of having fun, getting informed about current events and sharing their worldview without judgment.

What is your reasoning for running for president? I am a born leader and have many ideas. Plus it sounded like fun. I like to see everyone's voice heard whether I agree with them or not they deserve to speak their mind. This campaign has helped me to understand where others are coming from and their concerns and think of ways to help.

What separates you from the other people running? I think I'm the only adult running, lol so I guess age and experience. I think I've also been on imgflip the longest of all the candidates. I'm I don't think I'm that much different in worldview from the other candidates, I think we all want to see imgflip improve but perhaps have different ideas on how to get there.

Lastly, What do you plan to do to make img flip better. See that everyone is given a voice and chance to be heard.

pupplylover04:
disagree.
disagree
disagree, we see lgbtq+ ships all the time
Avoid conflicting topics, find common ground
I would step in, either to confront the bully, or see if the bullied needed support or help
I would like to find the cause of wars and try to figure out how to stop them
My plan is to make Imgflip a friendly and happy place for people to share their creativity
I am running because I hope to make a difference
I believe each person is special, no matter what others say, and everyone deserves help
I plan to free us of the ugly wars

I then asked:
could you give some more reasoning on why you had disagree as your first two answers
?
Puppylover04:

Ok sure.
First one, it is not toxic, if you stay in the right places. Some people go looking for fights and get in way too deep, at least thats what I see.
I just dont see too many things bad on imgflip. The only things that are wrong are what the people do, and how they take certain things

1. Somewhat disagree. There is more kind people than toxicity, but the toxicity just speaks louder.

2. Do we need changes? Yes. Large ones? No. All this website was made for is to have fun, and while we are accomplishing that there are some kinks to work out

3. Well *nervous laughter* my being a part of that community (lesbian), there are certain places or situations I don't exactly feel welcome. Of COURSE I can't speak for everyone, but from my experiences there have been some times where I felt a little unsafe. I even had to resort to posting my LGBT related memes anonymously. At the same time, I've gotten more love than hate, which was not expected. I posted a meme about me not being able to get a girlfriend, and I posted it in the middle school stream. Not a single homophobic comment. So in conclusion, there is more love than hatred, but the hatred rings so loudly that it hurts more. I'm so happy that this question is even being asked! Its really pleasing to know that people care.

4. We can't change what haters do, but we can change how we feel about it. If we overpower hate with positivity, it can make people feel more welcomed.

5. Make sure the person being bullied is comforted FIRST then confront the person being hateful.

6. Give a thank you speech. With all the people running obviously it would be a big honor to win.

7. A meme competition or something fun with different themes like that.

8. I want to give people a place where they feel safe and understood.

9. I know what it's like to be a minority. I know what it's like to be hated. I know what it's like to need a break from it all.

10. Realistically, how are we supposed to stop wars? It's a meme site, the best we can do is tell them to stop. Maybe instead, we can work on educating to stop wars instead of just bluntly saying "I'll stop the wars". Many people are just uneducated rather than evil.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share my opinion ❤️

(agree or disagree) I think imgflip is too toxic
- Sometimes, yeah... Although the entire internet is like that, but sometimes some people can really push the limit here.

(agree or disagree) I think imgflip is in a bad state and needs big changes + if so what I would do to fix this
- This is a bit question. IMGFLIP wants freedom of speech, but the point is, there's a limit to everything. The freedom of speech is not the right to oppress your view onto other people and especially not when they are not even correct.

(agree or disagree) I think imgflip has a problem with making sure the LGBTQ+ community feels welcome.
- Which place hasn't?

What would you do to make sure all types of people feel welcome on imglip?
- I welcome those who are nice to me, and I am not nice to those who are not nice to me. I've always acted as a mirror.

If you saw someone being bullied, or harassed, what would you do to help?
- I do stand up for them sometimes. Once I got scolded by the victim for that, oddly enough... Well, my sincerest apologies for lending a hand.

If you win the election, what would you do first?
- I won't participate, thank you.

If you win the election, what is your plan for the future?
- I won't participate, thank you.

What is your reasoning for running for president?
- I won't participate, thank you.

What separates you from the other people running?
- I won't participate, thank you.

Lastly, What do you plan to do to make img flip better?
- What can I do? I can only point people who make imgflip a bad place to their behavior. Mostly they only feel insulted by that and continue to troll around, and sometimes even ridicule you assuming moderators won't come to action anyway, making them feel like God. Pathetic I know, but I am not Obi Wan Kenobi.

The problem is that I have a character limit so I had to be as short as possible to answer all questions. The question is where the borderline lies between freedom of speech and trolling. The moderators here want to draw that line pretty far. The problem is, and that is also the issues Facebook is facing now, is that idiots with a bit of a strange point of view can easily get on the rampage, and the question is a bit if the borderline what can be written and what cannot be written on a site like this might be the point for discussion.

I also am careful on what I say on these matters. I've worked on many websites as a moderator and even administrator, and I value my professional position on this, and publicly criticizing imgflip on their moderation style is therefore something I don't like to do. This can look bad on me on websites I might moderate in the future.

In the end a community is only as good or bad as the attitude of their users. If a site attracts many users with an attitude problem, this will turn the mood on a site down. However no matter how strict you moderate, you cannot cover everything within a TOS, and some people are really good in walking on the edges of things. Some people here on imgflip are quite pro in that. Since you cannot change their attitudes. Even with the strictest moderation style imaginable, some people will manage to find these borderlines. It's a matter of luck on how people's attitudes are. I guess imgflip has currently a bit of bad luck... well in some streams more than others... But as users come and go the mood changes... There's a Dutch proverb: After rain comes sunshine (lit translated from Dutch). Perhaps you understand the meaning behind this metaphor.

well said, so to be clear, you think there should be some restrictions as far as freedom of speech goes?
2 ups, 4y,

I think the limitations of freedom of speech are a discussion point in general which includes but is not limited to imgflip. Freedom is a great power we all have, and when a great power comes a great responsibility. We all agree on it that freedom ends where it threatens the freedom of others. This goes for all facets of the diamond called freedom.

Now in freedom of actions, these limits are easier to see. Full freedom of action would allow me to kill somebody, just for fun, but we all agree on it that murder should be outlawed. And by killing somebody I deny somebody else the freedom to live. However kill => death is an easy action => consequence chain.

In freedom of speech things are harder. In the Netherlands we had a bank called DSB, and it was not doing well. A Dutch guy named Pieter Lakerman said it would bebest of all DSB customers would remove their money there. You can guess the result. A bank run, DSB went bankrupt immediately and the Dutch authorities were to pay millions of not billions in order to prevent economical damage caused by this bank run. The question is... Is Lakerman guilty for this disaster or is he not? Can you prove things would have turned out better if he didn't say it?

If person A says all Jews must die and person B actually takes a gun to make it happen, it's clear that person B has to go to jail, but how to judge person A. Is he to be punished for B's actions, or should A be protected by the laws of free speech? In court getting B condemned can be easy, but getting A to jail can be a very complicated trial. Now most laws have points that state you may not threaten people with death, and person A can still be condemned as a result although the way A used his words can be very important in how things will work out. But if A can be punished for what B did, is a harder case.

When using words, the direct action=>consequence can be pretty vague, as you are dependent on how people respond to them. Still words have their impact. I suppose you know the idiom "The pen is mightier than the sword". This idiom makes clear that whatever you say does have impact and does have consequences. And that taken into account words can threaten people's freedom, and thus there your freedom of speech can end. Of course words placed out of context can also damage, but then not to one who uttered them, but the people misinterpreting them are to blame, and as such things get more complicated.
