The sensible response should have been locking down our borders, compulsory checks for coronavirus for arrivals at our borders. Mandatory weekly checks of all healthcare staff and also immediately when symptomatic. Move healthcare staff who were over 50 years old off active units to safer areas or off duty.Two weeks of isolation for anyone who had arrived from overseas and their contacts....tracing and following up of all contacts and treatment when infected. Isolating our vulnerable populations such as the elderly, including those in nursing and long-term care homes....and others that are immunosuppressed. But shutting down our economy was really criminal....it was just a knee-jerk response that was led by China......and everyone had followed because no one had wanted to take the responsibility of making a different decision than anyone else was making.....so like sheep, everyone is being led off of the cliff.

Hi, I just read the thread here. Plenty of information to straighten some minds out but obviously some people are not grasping a thing your saying.
I hope it's contolled within the next month so that people can get back to a more normal.

In reading what your involved in I will put a link below for an interesting project in which they are getting samples of the Virus and tracking the genome and it's variants. I think it will interest you and you may not have seen it.
So far they had tracked that America had people from 15 different countries bring the virus at the time first cases were being recorded, And this number of sources I cannot see exceeded for any other country. The sheer number of people that must have been walking around with it is no help in controlling it but I'm not sure if the 15 origin countries equates to people from individual countries or do Chinese travellers make up a majority who found alternative paths back to US after the ban from China. Anyway, good to read your thoughts and opinion.

That's a difference in the order of magnitude of 10. Ten times the number of people died because they did not respond calmly and calculatingly.

Shutting down the economy for a 1% fatility rate IS THE POINT. Not a mistake, it's THE PURPOSE. Because it saves the lives of 4-9% of cases. And the economy will still be there when we're done, as long as we deal with the pandemic within the capacity of the healthcare system.

You are spouting bullshit. Dr. John Ioannadis from Stanford has the rate at 0.1% Majority of cases are very elderly with serious comorbidity. There is no pandemic. More people get sick and die from a poor economy than a moderate flu and cold season.

And just so that you know....I am on the frontline dealing directly with infected patients in the ICU. In the 2017/18 Flu season over 85,000 Americans died....we...did not shut down for that.....we never do. HiNi killed over 17,000 Americans....No one twitched at those deaths. More people will die from this lockdown if those jobs do not come back....because as a reminder drug overdoses kill between 60-80,000 Americans each year......a crisis brought on by joblessness during the obama years and easing from over 80,000 to below in the last year.....and that was because of jobs.

So then you understand these measures are the reason you have infected patients in the ICU, not gasping for air right outside of it.

No, we have infected patients all over our hospital.....as well as infected patients in the community. Only the ones who require ventilatory assistance are in the ICU....ours anyways. And we were doing this even before the govt did anything about closing down the economy....so one has nothing to do with the other....I have absolutely no idea how you came to that conclusion....it seems as if it was grasped out of thin air. We have had CV patients for over a month now.

You've read what happened in Italy, right? Infected patients living in hallways because there's not enough beds, staff like you get sick and untrained new hires are sent to the front lines with no idea what to do, choices about who gets the respirator and who dies - that's how the pandemic claims 7% of lives and not 1%.

If you are what you say you are, this is basic knowledge. We shut down the economy so that you can handle your caseload; if we let everyone get sick at the same time because Muh Capitalism, then you can't do your jobs and ten times as many people die.

Yeah....everybody knows that.....the media is broadcasting that erroneous information all of the time....They have suddenly all become medical and epidemiology specialists. What happened in Italy is because they did not have a functioning government.....have not had for several years now. Not helping was that their old leathermaking companies in the North had sold their business to the Chinese and had then allowed them to bring over 100,000 chinese workers to work those factories. There were direct flights between those Italian cities to Wuhan and surrounding areas. It did not help that Italy has the oldest population in Europe.....most living in the North where those factories and migrating chinese workers were....Italy DID NOT close it borders until it was too late. Not helping also was that population largely lives in apartments.....You get the idea what had happened next.....that was absolutely not surprising. Try again.....

I said shut down borders....meaning that until you get the handle on it and identify who is infected and who is not....that is the only way that you can control this. You cannot get control if you have wide-open borders with infected people flowing into your country or infected people from your country flowing into other countries.....that would be quite a mess would it not be? That bullshit has been exposed. It's only a few hospitals, and that happens in many countries around the world every flu and cold season. Simple google search will show that. Just this January in America they were reporting some hospitals overrun with flu patients, not CV.

I seriously doubt it'll be over in four weeks. I'd be surprised if the all-clear came before summer starts.

Oh, the all-clear will come long before then....this was just a badly managed overreaction worldwide. The only country that did not jump on the bandwagon was Sweden where they still are doing what swedes have always done....there is no quarantine of its population, lockdowns or job closures.....and so far they have about 8000 cases and under 600 deaths. It will be interesting to compare how they do in comparison with the rest of the world at the end of this. Flu kills over 650,0000 people around the world each year and not a beep from anyone. In the 2017/18 flu season in the USA over 85,000 Americans died from flu that year.....not a beep either.
