Thoughts and prayers is a good thing and gives comfort to those who need it. I guess we could just ignore it and say, "better luck next time." But then we'd be shamed for being insensitive.

I know what you're getting at here, at least I assume you don't mean any disrespect, but there are a lot of people who mock those who can only offer their prayers. And those people who do mock are terrible people. Their whole goal is to mock all religions as long as it isn't Islam they mock. Offering your thoughts and prayers shows a person thaylt they're being thought of and loved in a tragic time.

I get what you're saying about how they provide some comfort to people, but to many people like myself, thoughts and prayers are casually thrown around as a cheap substitute for something more substantive. It's like putting duct tape on a broken bone.

What do you expect people to do? Have a passport ready, to fly out to every tragedy in the world and do humanitarian aid? You expect people to have limitless funds, to pay for every journey, and to donate to every cause under the sun?

Christians who actually understand the scriptures do what they can to help. We try to vote in good politicians. We use our free speech to promote charity and other moral values. We do service projects in our community. And we do have humanitarian relief programs around the globe. On top of these, it doesn't hurt to also pray. Especially since you have zero proof it doesn't work. Prayers cost nothing except ego. They're worth a shot.

Shame on you, Octavia, for mocking others' beliefs. Shame on you for failing to maintain civility, and for failing to just leave people alone. Let people worship how they may, without being harassed. Atheists fail as miserably as anyone to create an open, pluralistic environment that tolerates different beliefs.

I don't expect people to do those things. That's beside the point, though. This meme is making fun of people who think that trite platitudes actually accomplish something.

Yes, many Christians do promote moral values, do service projects, and have humanitarian relief programs. And so do many non-Christians. And so do many atheists.

"...it doesn't hurt to also pray. Especially since you have zero proof it doesn't work."

I have evidence that prayer doesn't work. All the people who have prayed for something and never gotten it are evidence that prayer doesn't work. All the people who prayed for something and got something that kinda sorta resembles what they prayed for is evidence that confirmation bias works. Studies have shown that praying for sick people produces no discernible results which can be directly linked to the prayers.
