Memes do get downvoted back to submission. It's been happening for years on this site. Back in the day you could see the number of downvotes your memes got and I figured out that if your meme got featured and it got two quick downvotes without any upvotes, it would go back to submitted. I also had a meme I submitted that had 110 upvotes and something like 60 downvotes and it suddenly went back to submitted.

These mods here (especially acuity12) tend to bend the truth a bit or they don't answer the questions you ask at all.

Oh I didn’t make it because I believe it. In fact I figured it wouldn’t feature. I just wondered what everyone else thinks. I upvote lots of memes that I don’t agree with only because they’re thought provoking or good conversation starters even. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with political memes, but statistically they are more likely to contain hateful attacks toward others. We try not to approve things that attack other people, but political memes that are respectful and unbiased are perfectly fine. The main reason for this is that it's the homepage, and what we put on the homepage reflects directly on the entirety of Imgflip, not just the user who wrote it. On Meme Streams and private images, we are much closer to simply adhering to US law and nothing else. We may expand meme streams soon.

Unless the site has changed this, it has been happening for a long time. I never thought much of it, because I accept that that's the way things work. But I have had quite a few memes, that I knew would be unpopular, but in no way violated any terms, get featured and then wound up submitted rather quickly. I have also seen memes that did violate the terms, flaged them, but nothing was done. They remained featured, and even popular memes. I understand the MODs cannot manually review every meme. But if you automatically return a meme to submitted when it's flagged, I would have expected that to happen to the memes I reported that did violate terms. If you wait for a manual review, I would have expected that to happen to yhe memes that did not violate terms.

Then what's the point of a downvote option? If the downvotes don't do anything, why not just take it away completely and stop tricking users into thinking downvotes work?

I'm not buying it, but I would hope that a mod on this site wouldn't lie about something as trivial as a downvote option and whether they work or not.

Just because "downvoting to submission" is no longer a thing, that doesn't imply that downvotes no longer do anything (downvotes would presumably still affect the order of memes in Hot, even if they wouldn't send a meme back to submission).

Just not buying the mod's explanations. What really bothers me about the site is the "feedback" section. They tell you to leave you name and email if you want a response. I asked them a question about one of my memes that never got featured and left my name and email and hear NOTHING from them. The feedback is a joke. I've used it in the same manner 3 or 4 times and the same result...nothing.

I swear, this site is full of spoiled rotten kids who are only middle aged.

If true, that's VERY good to hear. But I honestly don't believe it. I've had two recently that featured, then went back to submission, then after sharing the links with friends and getting more comments and upvotes they went back to featured, and both ended up on the front page. Neither were in any way provocative or violated any terms. And I've had quite a few others go a similar way. That's simply inexplicable without downvoting back to submission.

I've read some top users talk about timing the difference between submitted and featured, and rate of point tally. That's rather sad, and not in the way they claim.

happens to me all the time
I submit a meme in line with terms, get a few dozen views and half a dozen upvotes in the first hours. And it's already doing fine in the top 20 pages hot section. Then all of a sudden it dies, although still featured. I check the hot pages: it's gone. I check my personal hot pages- it's LATEST. A barely a day old meme turned into LATEST behind year-old stuff - - within an hour or two.

Here I was referring specifically to "submitted" status. What you're experiencing here is the ranking order of images in the "hot" section, which can indeed vary significantly for multiple reasons over the course of time. You know, "proprietary algorithm" and stuff. Everything sinks toward 0 hotness over time, and of course downvotes usually reduce hotness.

I don't know the hot-list algorithm in detail but I know that it gives priority to newly submitted memes with little views&upvotes compared to year-old stuff with hundreds of views and dozens of upvotes.

So if a newly submitted meme goes right back to latest of your personal hotlist just after a few hours - behind year old stuff - this must be due to gang downvoting.
