Captain Kirk The Thinker | I WELCOME THE CRITICS. THE TROLLS? NIT SO MUCH. | image tagged in captain kirk the thinker | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
Though it hasn't happened a LOT, I don't mind the critics at all. I like to speak to them to get their creative feed back. The trolls who are just bent on being nasty though are irritating. I like to engage them too though. By the end they are usually either more irritated at me than when it started, or they come around and we have a good laugh anyway.

Personally, I see no reason why a meme-maker should have to have any patience for either critics or trolls.

a) Discussing things like that takes time and energy, with little perceived reward;

b) If a meme has already gotten to the front page, it's proved itself a "success" in some measure (at least within the context of imgflip, if that means anything). Therefore, in a way, you could say that any comment a critic could make about how the meme could be improved has been rendered pointless. The critic doesn't know whether the input would actually improve the meme or not. Since a meme getting to the front page is already rare, it's unlikely that the suggested changes would have made it perform better.

However, your approach does sound good for people who are actually interested in other people's opinions (which is probably the more mature approach - but I just can't be bothered).

Hopefully taking that approach doesn't tire you out and sap your creative meme-making strength. :-)

"Personally, I see no reason why a meme-maker should have to have any patience for either critics or trolls."

This is why I think the powers that be should allow us to block people if we want. I know some people would use a block feature liberally, but I think most people would save it for the real pains in the arse. The ones who do the criticizing and trolling are usually the same folks. Of course some have alt accounts, but those should be blocked as well.

"Hopefully taking that approach doesn't tire you out and sap your creative meme-making strength"

I admit, sometimes I don't have staying power in the exchange. But I fail at "people" in non-cyber life, so I guess the anonymity of the internet as well as the power to just delete a post entirely has afforded me a bit of bravery and diminished my awkwardness and timidness. Being generally fascinated about watching people do what they also drives me to an extent. If that makes any sense.

Yeah, what you're saying makes sense. I mostly wrote that part in a light-hearted way. :-)

Even if some people would use it too liberally, that's their loss. It would still be good to have it as an option.

Look, no offense, I'm sure you meant it in a nice way, but I'd prefer not to be labeled as that kind of user ("shed good light where needed"). I'm just a guy who comes here to mess around.

Sorry. Just saying you're good with these explanations of the other side of the coin from time to time. But I get what you're saying.

There's also another reason, c) - which is a bit harder to put into words. But it might go something like this:

Even if you mean well, criticizing a person on a public forum can embarrass that user in front of other users. Therefore, a comment on their meme, where everyone can read it, may not be the best place for a critique (to be fair, though, imgflip doesn't give a lot of other options - e.g. there's no efficient and easily accessible private messaging system).

That doesn't mean no critiques should be given, but in my view, critiques should generally be avoided, or at least given carefully, when given.

But everyone's just going to do what they want anyway, and I wouldn't be surprised if I break these guidelines myself shortly, so maybe it's all a bit pointless.

I understand all that. I'm just saying how "I" handle them, not speaking on what others should do.

Your question doesn't make clear whether it's from the point of view of the person giving the comments, or the person receiving them. It makes a difference.

If it's from the point of view of the person giving the comments, my reply would be something like this: i.imgflip.com/2gx4q4.jpg (click to show)

...and if it's from the point of view of the person receiving them, my reply would be something like this: i.imgflip.com/2gx4kn.jpg (click to show)

Not your fault? But you made the meme...

a) I wasn't talking about any of my memes. I was talking about a general pattern.

b) While it's true that choosing not to make a meme would prevent the possibility of that meme getting onto the front page, the decision to make it isn't what gets it to the front page (otherwise every meme would get to the front page). That's what I mean when I said it's not their fault.

You don't get your own meme to the front page. Other users do that, through upvotes and comments. So that's why I'm saying, if someone doesn't like the fact that a meme is on the front page, they shouldn't take their frustration out on the user who made the meme, because it's the upvoters and commenters who got it there, not the user. I hope that makes sense.

If someone is posting negative comments on a meme, that means they really dislike it or disagree with it. It has nothing to do with being front page, other than the fact that because a meme is on front page, it gets a lot more exposure.

No one complains about positive comments they get on their front page memes, do they?
