Where I live, we are shoulder to shoulder with people of African ancestry who are separatists that identify as black and they call me white. I can't fill out a form of any type without checking a box of how I identify. Although, I'm called white, I have Irish,Briton,Welsh,African,and native american ancestry.
Why the identity politics.

There actually are white identitarians though.
Usually identitarians prefer minority traits so they can call for special privileges, but some of them are grouping around shared 'whiteness'.
Identitarian versus not is like:
"I am a white, whites unite!" versus "I am white"
or
"I am a brunette, brunette power!" versus "I am brunette".

It's a psychological matter of instantiation versus description.
Some people unite by physical traits, other people, like me, think identity is about personality, and a third type of people think group identity at all is a bad idea.
