O course this relies on a possibly wrong translation from the original Greek, didn't have enough time to thoroughly study the orginal right now, but it seems that "he" could be as well translated as "it" (ho phos - masculine in Greek - "the light" in English and thus "it"- the subject of the verb seems not to be clear at a first glance, and "ho phos" would make much more sense.
