TELL ME, MR. ANDERSON WHAT GOOD IS A COMMENT THREAD, IF YOU'RE UNABLE TO COMMENT? | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
In case anybody was wondering why I don't just ignore the people who are harassing and downvoting me and other users here, I wanted to briefly explain why.

Simply put, it's because I can't. That's not to say I don't have the willpower, although that is a secondary reason, to be sure. What I mean is that their impact cannot be ignored. Words can be ignored. Insults can be ignored. Verbal attacks can be ignored. What can't be ignored are the comment timers and comment reputation impediments.

I've recently had comment timers as high as 15 minutes. When you can limit how often someone can comment, that is, essentially, a form of silencing them, at least temporarily. I never abuse the downvote system on imgflip. I downvote rarely and flag even less than that. And I don't have any alt accounts whatsoever.

If you want people on this site to respect you, listen to you and take you seriously as a mature person, then I would strongly advise you to not misuse or abuse the downvote/flag system. When I ask a simple, inoffensive question and it gets downvoted into hidden status, there's something seriously wrong going on.

If disagreement or criticism bother you that much, then you don't belong on a site where mature adults (more-or-less) congregate. And if you meet legitimate intellectual queries with insults, downvotes and flagging, you're pretty much telling everyone here that you have no intelligent or rationally defensible reply. Nobody brings a gun to a gunfight then uses a knife. If you had an evidence- and logic-based answer, I can only assume you would have presented it. Since you didn't present it, that tells me that you don't have it.

This message is not meant just for the trolls, because I really don't think they're receptive to constructive criticism. If they were, things would not be at the point which they are currently at. It is simply an explanation of where I stand on this issue, to anyone who will listen.

This whole ordeal may upset and frustrate me at times, but I will not stop doing what I'm doing, because then the trolls will have won. And I won't allow them to win. I won't allow them to have the final word. And I certainly won't allow them to run me out of town. Imgflip is my home, and I like it here.

I hate to see this. I really do.

All too often it's those who can debate rationally and respectfully who end up being unjustly silenced or browbeaten until they just leave. I have not yet been the victim of this nonsense, but as opinionated as I can be, I figure it's only a matter of time.

I've been debating with faceless usernames since before the internet was even a thing, and I've learned one thing in all that time. There are two things that will never go away; Trolls, and tantrum-throwing provocateurs.

Trolls are easy enough to deal with. If you don't bite their hook, they go fish somewhere else. The tantrum-throwers are another matter. These are people (and I use the term generously) who will assault an entire message board and bring it down, just to be vindictive.

Unfortunately, passive automation can't control them because while they may be childish and ignorant in some areas, they usually pretty tech smart and they know how to spin the host's controls to their benefit. The only way to deal with these people is with active human intervention. And trust me, even then it's never a permanent solution.

The Admins of ImgFlip need to make some changes to this site, if they want to keep the 'good' people here and not have it turn into a haven for flamers and provocateurs. First, anonymous posting needs to go away. Second, the downvote system needs to be completely overhauled. I can recognize the intent on the back-end to try to restrict people who post garbage, but it has been analyzed, manipulated, and co-opted to serve the people it was designed to thwart.

But until the Admins realize they have a very real problem with their passive content control apparatus (the downvote system), there are things the community can do to help out.

1. If you think you're being targeted, post about it in whatever meme is at the top of the front page. Link to the submission or comment that was spam downvoted.*

2. Be on the lookout for users who are being spam downvoted, get into their profile, and upvote everything you can find.*

3. Anytime you see a hidden "low-rated comment", give it an upvote. It doesn't matter who posted it, and even if you don't think it deserves one. The system is broken, and the sooner the Admins realize this, the better.

* Don't worry about people "crying wolf" just to get upvotes. The community knows who the usual targets of these attacks are. It's just too bad we can't see who the targeters are.

Problem with #1 is that it has been posted and memed on the Front Page that postings that have nothing to do with a meme tread shall be downvoted along with everything else they got for spamming.

I have upvoted those in need myself when I find out they need it.
I had learned soon enough when I became active on meme threads late last year to avoid political & religious ones, etc.

Easy fix with the vote system: Get rid of it. Down, Up, all.
Downvoting can cripple users unfairly,
Upvoting can cripple creativity by fostering the reposting of already proven popular memes in a silly high school popularity contest played by middle aged and older adults with kids themselves. (Ok, I said with someone the other night that repost/stealing is gonna happen, so no need to fuss about it, but still,,,)

Maybe a system where points are garnered from activity by multiple users on a thread can be used for those whose egos truly need the boost.

Personal fave was seeing a meme with 2 upvotes, but a simple "lol" comment - no meme, just "lol" - from a popular user got 4 upvotes. How utterly ridiculous is that?

Sorry, I tend to sound cranky a bit,,,

In regard to #1, I don't think it's hard for people to understand the distinction between someone using a popular meme as a platform to shamelessly plug their own meme, and someone genuinely asking for help because they're under attack by a downvote spammer.

I don't know, I think the like/dislike paradigm has value. People like when other people like their submissions. If that didn't matter, Twitter wouldn't even be a thing.

I just think using it as a means of letting the community "self-police" fails once the crybabies figure out how to twist it into a weapon to use against people who piss them off for whatever imaginary reason, the way it is designed currently.

They need to implement some kind of diminishing returns on downvoting. A progressively increasing cooldown timer on the downvoting of a particular user (This user has been downvoted too many times recently, try again later) would be one way. Another would be to make it so that all downvotes after X number within X minutes would no longer count against the account being downvoted (You could downvote all day long, but only the first <#ofDownvotes> per <TimeElapsed> would actually matter). Pretty much anything that would slow down the rate at which one could accumulate downvotes would be helpful.

These passive effects were intended to allow the core community to "moderate" the site, but that isn't what's happening anymore. It's not broken beyond repair. There are a lot of things they could do to tweak it so it would still serve it's intended function and bad people couldn't use it to harass good people.

You could ditch the leaderboards though. It has turned into nothing more than a list of memers who's balls need gargling by sycophants. I think the Submitted-to-Featured delay needs work too. There's no real reason it should take as long as it does, or happen in such huge chunks that newly featured memes show up on page 7, because no one drills down that far.

I like the idea of limiting how many times someone can downvote within a certain period of time. That would solve the problem of mass downvote attacks.

I personally like the leaderboard...when I'm on it :) when I'm not, it motivates me to work harder, comment more, and be more active to try and get back on it. It can be a good motivator.

I'm with Octavia. I like the idea of a downvote limit in a given time period. that would prevent user ???? from down voting every comment made by another user, as well as their submissions. Have you sent a feedback suggestion on that? if not, it needs to be done soon. I'm certain that these downvote fairies can be controlled, but it's foolish for imgflip to not step up to the plate and do something to control them.

As someone who has on the brutal end of downvote attacks, I know that they happen not just because you downvote someone else, and it also doesn't cause people not to listen to you. There was a point in time in which people refused to listen to me because they mistook what I was saying as attacks on other users. Yes attacks did come later, but that was because of the treatment I was receiving of constantly getting downvoted and people refusing to consider what I was saying. Numerous times I received comment timers, far exceeding 15 minutes. I have received timers at the max of what they could be set at, 2 hours, more times than I can count. Of course nobody wanted to back me up and help out, mainly because I believe they didn't want to be attacked as well. Of course the attacks on me started even before I started trying to notify people of issues with the site that mainly involved the featuring of custom memes. You know what I was told with the first attacks started? It was my fault and that I brought it on myself. So in all honesty, I have little sympathy for others who experience comment timers and essentially beg for help for it, mainly because no one was willing to consider helping me. Of course a few months after I left, people started recognizing everything I had stated to be accurate, those who I stated was harmful to this site and other issues this site had. However, I still get criticized for things I said and did.

Don't get me wrong, I hate how the downvote system is. This site thinks they fixed things by removing the downvote counter, but in my opinion they only made things worse. In all honesty, they should get rid of the downvote button and implement a block feature instead. Allowing us to block individuals who are attacking us so they can't comment or vote on our memes/comments, that would be more useful than any downvote button can be, regardless of the limits you put on it. If we can silence the trolls via a block system, then they would have no choice but to leave.

You can label me what you want because of this comment, but until people actually experience what I have in regards to comment timers, I really don't think they have the right to complain, let alone have any sympathy.

I'm sorry to hear what you went through. I don't recall seeing that going on when it was happening to you. I've never had any problems with you or any reason to downvote you. I'm not sure why anyone else would.

If you recall, I was formally known as d2renterprise and Chakotay. I had to delete those accounts because of the timers.

*sigh* Don't ppl realize that an honest question to which you don't immediately have the answer is an opportunity to do the necessary work to refine your arguments or perhaps even *gasp* change your mind to some degree? smh An unchallenged argument might prove to be a weak argument. Don't they want to see if it is or isn't? Come on people! Don't wuss out. Don't act like a right wing internet antifa. Just deal with things like adults.

I've never targeted anyone on this site and I never will. If I see or hear from a user that I know is disagreeable, I do my best to avoid them...and that's not many. I hate to see wise, established imgflippers get run out of town. Don't leave, stay strong.

Hmm . . .

Okay, so I'm just a kid, with a mere fourteen years on my back, that found this site while trying to attempt a sense of humour. (On a side note, not sure if that has entirely worked.) As soon as I joined, I knew I was on to a winner, but it took me a while to fully understand/appreciate everything that goes on here.

Let me start by saying everything has its faults. That may sound obvious but its so annyoingly true you can't escape it. I've been here for ten months, and although that pales into insignificance in comparison with some of you here, I have learnt more things about this place than I thought I would ever need to. Yes, I have read through every single comment made by anyone so far on this post, and (unfortunately, perhaps?) I have to say I agree with them all.

A problem with taking away the downvote system would be that if a genuine user sees something genuinely upsetting to them, or something like that, they've essentially got no choice but to be neutral, which can be a hard thing to do. I do think, however, that removing the downvoting system would be better.

Like I said, everything has its faults, nothing is perfect. Let me rephrase that, no ONE is perfect. We do need to be able to deal with (constructive) criticism, because it will crop up in some part of our lives, in a more important place than this, and if we can't deal with it here, then God/Allah/Buddha/whatever help us.

This is a complicated place. Its a complicated life. Trolls may not be able to be stopped completely from what they are doing, and the same for those non-trolls group of people who will take advantage of others whenever they can, but they can learn (even if its only a small thing). Often they do not stop to think before they do/say something - a point I suppose all of us are guilty of every so often - and it can get out of hand, but I believe it best not to interfere too much. Let them sort themselves out, focus your mind on things more important. People can change. Whether they choose to or not is another matter.

There will always be someone who listens, even if you don't think they do. In order to get to the high points in life, you have to start low. All emotions are natural: happiness, sadness, anger, love, confusion, we all get them. Imgflip is our home, and no one can take that away from us. Essentially, what I am trying to say is: be careful. But we only get one life (as far as any of us know), so we must enjoy the ride while we get the chance.

:)

Where you have a problem with some of the trolls here is that you don't write like a 14 year old. Your ability to express yourself is better than many college students. Trolls average a fifth grade writing skill and a first grade comprehension. Too often a quote is attributed to Mark Twain about arguing with idiots. He was not the first to say it. "When arguing with fools, don't answer their foolish arguments, or you will become as foolish as they are." -Proverbs 26:4

I'll take that second sentence as a compliment - thank you! - but I can completely understand your point, I have learned a lot from this site, things like that being amongst them. Like the quote as well :)

Mark Twain is best known for paraphrasing it. I was going to use his version, but decided it was good to show how long the trolls have been with us.

Yes, it was meant as a complement. Trolls hate intelligence, because they lack it. Sure, they can spout every word that their political/religious leaders say, but never actually do any research. if you do, you can expect them to yell "fake news"
