With half as many kids today, it still takes two full time jobs and often a part time job or two on the side to make ends meet. At the current rate, I would not be surprised if our future wouldn't hold something akin to Heinlein's group marriages. Refer to Stranger in a Strange Land, The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, Friday, and the Lazarus Long stories.
People didn't have as much opportunity to spend money on every sort of gadget and luxury and lived more simply than they do now. I grew up in the 60s before we could even have a cable bill. A candy bar was a nickel, and I would scour the alleys for quart beer bottles that could be returned for a nickel. As children, we played outside. The public pool was a 10 minute walk away and cost a dime. I could walk there alone when I was 5. Now that pool is closed because the city spends its tax dollars to do other things than keep up the pool. And no one wanted to pay the true cost of using the pool. And that is the point I am heading to: people want something for nothing, so the government gives it to them. As the government goes deeper in debt, it keeps borrowing, which increases the money supply, which makes our money worth less. So we demand more and more services, which the government must go into debt to pay for, because there is not enough money, even if you confiscated the money of every millionaire, to keep up our exorbitant standard of living. So, we have done this to ourselves.

It only sounds good in retrospect. what time I spent in the 50s, all I did was learn to walk, talk, and use the toilet. Still, as time progressed, Mom worked part-time during that era to try and get ahead. That is, between pregnancies. During that era, Mom and Dad went from having an only child to ending up the decade with # 6 being born. (literally. my baby brother was born Dec. 31, 1959) It wasn't always easy, but we made do. By the time he was born, we'd moved into a 4 bedroom house with a finished attic. Grandma had moved in with us because she'd just been widowed shortly after I was born. The oldest, we put up in the attic, the baby slept with Grandma, I slept with my older brother and my sisters had a room to themselves. Mom and Dad had their own room. Oh,and we had 2 bathrooms. Big help with a family that size.
Yeah, things were carefree then, but really, what worries does a 3 year old have?
Lol I meant the future!

And they were still allowed to look good! I would love living in the 50's for awhile, so much more "Free" than now eh?
