Leonardo Dicaprio Cheers Meme | GOOD QUESTION | image tagged in memes, leonardo dicaprio cheers | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
Fare question IMO. What I believe God is saying here is that we all have the potential to put other things (gods) before Him. God (big 'G') is the Creater and Sustainer of all life. Only He can give us an understanding of our true identity. Only He, through His Son, can give us eternal life. When we look to other things for our identity, life, purpose, enjoyment, comfort etc. we make those things our god (little 'g'). E.g. when some people are hurting they might turn to drugs to numb the pain, thereby making drugs their god. When people look to their career to give them their identity and sense of value, they make their job their god. There are lots of 'gods' in our world: success, sex, money, power, comfort, fashion etc. All this is not to say that God does not want us to enjoy the things He gives us (including the previous list). He certainly does and it gives Him joy to see us enjoying them. But never at the exense of forgetting who is the Giver of the gifts and trying to get 'life' from these things apart from Him. Eventually the pursuit of these things apart from God will lead to spiritual death. Hope that makes sense ;-)

Well thought out response! In the handful of Bible chapters that I have read, I find the metaphorical lens of interpretation to be much more interesting and insightful. Same goes for this verse.

Batman Slapping Robin Meme | YOU SHOULDN'T DISCUSS RELIGION RUBBISH. WE SHOULD BE TALKING MORE ABOUT THE IMPORTANT THINGS. | image tagged in memes, batman slapping robin | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
It's a 'wild' book (books). Before God got a hold of me, the Bible was a pretty boring book to read and hard to understand. Once I placed my faith in Jesus it was like I was seeing it with a totally different set of eyes and I could see some things much more clearly. And like you say, there are ofter different levels of truth e.g. historical, prophetic and metaphorical as you point out. Without His Holy Spirit to help us interpret it, it's a book (books) that is at risk of being misunderstood and misapplied. Keep asking and searching for the truth.

You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart (Jeremiah 29:13).

... forgot to mention as Mooseman684 rightly points out, that 'gods' can refer to Satan (fallen angel), people in authority, false dieties / evil spirits (demons) etc.

The pagans had many Gods (ever check your horoscope?). There were also many polytheistic Arabs until they were cleansed by Muslims. Faithless people need idols.

Well all good Soviet Agents should read the whole thing (old and new Test.), and keep asking questions. :-) Hopefully you're being sincere and can deal with the silliness around here. Quite a few people actually know there stuff. Heh.

If you were another "just making a joke" well... then too bad. :/

Many OT passages make it quite clear that the early Hebrews were not strict monotheists.

It's true that there were times when the nation of Israel went after other 'gods' (e.g. the golden calf incident), but the Jewish law forbade having any other gods (small 'g') before the God (big 'G') of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. So while in practice they blew it at times, the revelation they received from God (big 'G') was clear - one God. The OT is replete with examples that show when they worshiped (believed and relied) upon the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, they were blessed. But when they followed the 'gods' of the surrounding nations, they strugled big time. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, also revealed Himself later as the Father of Jesus Christ. (Apologies for any spelling mistakes).

You're correct, but I was just pointing out that the ancient Israelites did indeed accept the existence of other deities. If they didn't think other deities existed, then they wouldn't have been lured into worshipping them to begin with. And God (Yahweh) wouldn't have needed to tell them not to worship any other gods besides him.

See all of chapter 18 of 1 Kings (esp: 1 Kings 18:25-27).

They accepted the existence of false gods but Jewish doctrine never accepted the existance of an equally powerful deity/deities. The problem came when some, but not all, of Israel started trusting the 'gods' of the surounding nations. These so called gods were many and varied. Some even worshiped trees ?!? False gods and the dostrine of false gods are inspired and empowered by Satan (fallen angel) and demons (fallen angels). In a classic showdown scene in the Bible between the true God and the so called god of Baal, the prophet Elijah mocked the prophets of Baal, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself (i.e. on the can), or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.” Their so called god empowered by Satan and his demons was no match for the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob. No so called god is on His level. They got a good butt kicking that day.

While you'll not find many in the West worshiping trees, the 'gods' of today are many and varied and just as clever at diverting our attention away from Father. I've covered this topic in my first post above.

keep in mind this book has some translation issues-

To the standard reader it means that you should not praise anything above him, this can include objects like gold or desires like power.

From a Mormon perspective (Where all men and women are here to receive knowledge, then to return to God and become gods.) it can mean many different things.
