It's one thing if you're, like, 60 years old and you've been smoking since you were 8, but when I see people in their 20s and 30s smoking (or nastier--dipping), it just blows my mind.

10 ups, 2 replies
How does education and being knowledgeable about tobacco correlate? I'm not stupid, I'm an honors student with a scholarship who has taken college level classes in aerospace engineering and programming. I bet if I wasn't educated I would know quite a bit more about the subject.
reply

Being educated doesn't mean you go to school, you can be learned anywhere by anything and you'd be educated.

Sarcasm does not translate well to the written word. Word of advice, if you're making a sarcastic joke, follow it a smiley so people know your intentions.
reply

Be sure to use the old fashioned text style smiley like this :-)
Because if you use the emoji on your phone, they don't always render and end up being turned into question marks. That makes matters worse. Ugh, I had it happen to me. You try and put a smile on it and end up in a mess.
Here's a smiley from an iPhone... ????

You're still young. Just wait until that carpel tunnel sneaks up on you. Pain gets so bad, you want to kill yourself. Can't blow your brains out cause you can't hold a gun. Try to hang yourself, but you can't tie a knot. Try to take poison, but the pills keep falling out if your hand.

Ouch. I've only had arthritis since, like, forever, so I only have a slight clue about your pain.

I started oking when I was your age, and now I have grandkids your age. I don't recommend taking it up.

As for your pain, talk to your doctor about it if you live in a state that offers medical cannabis. You don't have to smoke it, but think of the crappy tasting meds you've taken over the years. Imagine eating a brownie for pain.

No, I'm not trying to influence you into using drugs, but the research on its effectiveness on pain is very good. Of course, your parents will need to be in on this decision. You may have to suffer until you're 18. I'm lucky because a couple of Tylonol do the trick for me.
reply

Don't plan on doing anything for the pain, pain tells you that there's something wrong and if I do something different and the pain goes away, I'll know how to help myself.

All of you are dead men and women walking, none of you non smokers can take anything with you after your guaranteed death! So who the f**k really cares? I raised 5 kids, I gave them an education, and they're living well, now I can die happy at any second! Smoking or not smoking makes absolutely no f**king difference!

reply

I agree with you there, going through life being a health nut who's self centered, self serving, egotistical prick who thinks their way is the the only way, is a great way to die alone! That is actually the opposite side of the spectrum from a smoker, they are both something you don't want! Health nut assholes remind me of SoCal! Lol.

My grandfather has a month left. He got lung cancer from smoking. And think of all the inconveniences that it's given you.

I was speaking with my local convenience store manager this morning and she told me her father was diagnosed yesterday with stage 4 lung cancer and never smoked a day in his life.

Your point is well taken though. I know it's bad and there are many reasons not to do it. It's just not as simple as a horror story being enough to dump it :(

I worked at the same place as my younger (but an adult) sister. I saw her smoking on her break. I felt like I should "tell on her." (Our parents smoked growing up, but they had quit by this time). I don't consider smoking to be like this super horrible thing, but I find it really odd when I see someone my age or younger doing it. It was never "cool" for our generation. Also, I live in California which has made it so inconvenient for so long (it's not allowed just about anywhere, even in your own apartment), I just can't picture someone taking it up.

As far as I can tell, only a few businesses still allow smoking inside, like casinos. The specific incident which inspired me to make this meme was leaving a truck stop south of Detroit the other day and seeing one of the employees out back smoking who looked like she was in her 20s or maybe early 30s. Dipping is something I see pretty frequently even among guys in their 20s. I have tried cigarettes in my youth but never actually became a smoker, but chewing tobacco is something I have absolutely no desire to try. Countless times I've been checking in at a warehouse, and the security guard will have an empty soda bottle he's using for his spit, and it straight up makes me want to gag, it's so nasty.

My generation still more or less sees smoking as a 'cool' thing. Back in 8th grade, three students were caught smoking in the bathroom. I know of people who smoke in my school too.

Smoking is, and always will be, "cool," because it is both "adult" and "rebellious." I smoked for about 5 years (nothing so hardcore as "a pack a day" - more like 5-8 each day), starting with Camels, and then switching to American Spirits (which are pure tobacco, no additives - the sincerest way to smoke, really). I still buy a pack now and again, so I guess one could argue that I never really quit. The longest I've gone without smoking, within the last 5 years, is probably 3-4 months.

In any case, smoking can be a very enjoyable habit. It's addictive both biologically and psychologically. Interestingly, you also end up meeting and getting to talk with people that you otherwise would not have encountered.

Alas, it is true that America (and California in particular) have turned against smokers. Most people consider it a disgusting habit, on top of it being extremely unhealthy for you. It is true that, of all the things a person can do to improve his or her health (for example, exercising or eating a healthy diet), quitting smoking is number one. That is to say, smoking is so bad for you that the health benefits of quitting smoking surpass those gained by taking up exercise or improving one’s diet.

Once you have been a smoker, you can never again be a “non-smoker.” You can only ever be an “ex-smoker.” And if you have never been a smoker, you may never truly understand its appeal.

I'm also considering buying a hookah (which I guess makes me a hypocrite considering this whole meme) :p the major difference is that hookah tobacco is smoked far less frequently than cigarettes, and doesn't have the added chemical preservatives that cigarettes have.

But for everybody else, it's incredibly foolish. With all that is known about smoking, as well as the cost of it, I too can't fathom why anybody would want to take it up now.

I think young people do it to be cool. Or perhaps they think it makes them look tough. Or maybe they want to be like adults. For the ones who says it makes them feel good. I really don't see how it could make someone mellow out that other ways can't.
