I could have kept naming them, trust me. I've been a fan since I was kid. "I Got A Name" was one of the 1st 2 45s I ever bought.

Lmao! I found a similar picture, without the crosshairs or text, so maybe it's an actual screenshot with someone looking through a telescope or something :)

Good question, has socrates ever explained what was going on?
reply

I think he did, don't remember much about it though... :/

I think socrates said he was doing it just to see how many people would actually upvote random memes with numbers

I made them because I wanted to see how many upvotes memes with "little to no content" would get (the idea was to make them as free of content as possible).

I've seen people say on the site things like, 'popular users get upvotes just because they're popular.' So I wanted to see what would happen if a user who was on the Top 10 leaderboard (like I was, when I started the series) posted a series of memes that had no real meaning to them. I just chose numbers because it seemed an easy way to have memes that didn't have a joke or much of a real message in them. I expected that the first few would get some upvotes, but not very many, and that the number of upvotes would dwindle over time.

Unfortunately it was a bust, since people thought there was some intrigue going on, so they upvoted them more than a lot of my other memes - so it didn't give any useful information.

Wouldn't that kind of prove the "popularity" upvote theory? What i mean is, because you are a top user everyone followed along, trying to figure out what you were doing, if the memes had been made by an unknown user, they most likely would have been completely ignored...

In almost all communities this happens naturally. Top users are followed and noobs struggle to make a name for themselves if that's their intent. Back in the day I ran a few chat boards (remember them?) and inevitably there was a sharp distinction between the stars, the satellites and the black holes.

Sort of. The thing is though, those number memes seemed like they got even more attention than some of my other memes for some reason. So even though it corroborates the fact that popular users get more views (something we already knew), it still didn't help me get closer to establishing any kind of baseline as to what kind of votes that would translate to on average, if you know what I mean. That's why I thought of it as a failure.
