Also, this probably sounds like a cliche, but I think this site's more fun if you don't worry about points or what other users are doing. Why not just make memes/comments etc that are funny and interesting to you? Points are fun, but they're not the main thing.

You'd be surprised. I went up the leaderboard much quicker than I expected, just by making comments on memes. Your meme comments are a lot of fun.

This is from someone who is on the leaderboard, not because of front page but because I stay busy reading, upvoting, commenting and taking the time to compliment and let them know their efforts are appreciated.

I've heard this story before, but I think it's basically a myth. I don't think most people will upvote a meme just because it's by a popular user.

If it were actually true that it was "just" because its by a popular user, wouldn't it mean that all memes by popular users would get 100+ votes?

It's definitely true there's some benefit to being a popular user (when people see your name on the leaderboard, they can click on it, check out your memes, and upvote them more than they would if you weren't on the leaderboard) - but not enough to make the kind of difference you're talking about.

Maybe. Admittedly making an anonymous meme complaining about other people on the site is not a classy move.

But I figure maybe it could be a new person, just getting the feel for the site, and maybe this is just their first impression of it.

By the way my experience on this site seems similar to yours. I went up the leaderboard without getting many front page hits. I've been on the front page more regularly lately, but that's just the last couple of months. Most of my journey up the leaderboard was the same way you've been doing it, just commenting on memes and staying active on the site. Imgflip can be a lot of fun. :)

Yes, it was actually you, Raydog, Spurs and Chov that really got me going. I was surprised and happy to see some comments show up on my submissions. Once that happened I started to actually pay attention. That's why I really do try to look at as many new submissions a day as possible and vote/comment on what I find funny or makes me think, even some that are borderline. Its a very cool community on here and the best part is the more the merrier is truer here than anywhere else!

I've checked popular players memes before. Some I don't think are funny. So I don't vote. It's the crowd that reads them that think it's upvoteable. On a different site they aren't popular with that crowd.

If it is seen more often, then it is likely to get more votes. I look at the leaders & check them sometimes. Mostly I agree with socrate's comments here, though. Just have fun. If kissing butt is fun for you, then try that! But Making comments is usually not kissing butts, I think. ALSO there is a natural psychology to want to feel appreciated. Sometimes what I think are my best memes don't get many views, or likes. Decide to have fun, or it's probably not worth it. I wonder why some bozos from who knows where should bother me, but it happens.
